At the other end of the scale to AVB comes Frank De Boer. Capped 112 times by his native Holland after iconic spells at Ajax and FC Barcelona, known as a stylish ball-playing centre-back and alongside his twin brother Ronald was a mainstay for both club and country.

Frank continued that success in the capital with the Dutch giants. After spells in the youth academy and part of the Netherlands coaching set-up that went to the World Cup Final in 2010, the former defender was named as caretaker manager in December of the same year after Martin Jol was sacked.

A 2-0 win over AC Milan in the San Siro in his first game was followed by De Boer leading the club to their first title in seven years in 2010/11, and the club legend built upon his honours-filled playing career by leading de Godenzoden to four straight Eredivisie wins.

A Phillip-Cocu inspired resurgence meant that De Boer last two seasons at Ajax didn’t see them finish as champions after 2014, and he decided to resign at the end of last season.

Known for playing the traditional Ajax way in a 4-3-3 formation, his illustrious playing career and ability to rebuild teams after sales of his best players makes him an ideal candidate for the Southampton job, despite question marks over the last two campaigns of his tenure.
