Three potential big-money signings to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Manchester United

Alvaro Morata – Real Madrid

The Spanish striker is another potential target, as reports Don Balon, who has been previously linked with rivals Chelsea. The 24-year-old has had a frustrating career so far, having struggled to break into the team at the Santiago Bernabeu, before being sold to Juventus, only to be bought back by Real Madrid, as per a clause in his sale agreement.

His return to the club has at least been justified by the granting of more game time, he has played over 1000 minutes (more than Olivier Giroud at Arsenal, for example), scoring 12 times, averaging one goal every 88 minutes. For a player denied the advantages brought by more regular starts, it is an impressive rate.

Fifteen goals from 63 appearances over two seasons in Italy was less remarkable but he has done enough to impress Antonio Conte, who The Guardian say offered Madrid €60m for Morata last summer.

The Spaniard is another young forward who has shown an ability to play out wide, although his preference, and strength, is through the middle.

If Manchester United are serious about replacing Ibrahimovic, not just his scoring contributions but character and strength, all of these targets may fall short. However, they each have their merits and at least two of them have a point to prove.

With age on the players’ sides and the immense wealth behind Manchester United, don’t be surprised if bids are made for at least one of these names in the summer. Jose Mourinho, Old Trafford and one of the highest wages in European football should be enough to lure them in, Champions League football or not.
