Chelsea will be looking to strengthen this summer and equip themselves to defend their title next season, with the added pressures of Champions League football.
The Mirror included an interesting line in their report on James Rodruguez, which stated that Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa are set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
The latter isn’t a surprise, but the former is. He played himself into the team under Antonio Conte and certainly has something to offer the squad as they head into the new season.
That said, there will be many teams tracking the Spaniard and he won’t be short of options if he was to leave the Premier League champions. Here are three possible destinations…
Everton
If he was to remain in the Premier League, it would be unlikely that he would move to another top six club. Tottenham and Arsenal are out of the question, due to his history with the latter.
He wouldn’t suit Pep Guardiola’s heavy pressing style at Manchester City, while Manchester United already have Paul Pogba and won’t need another creative midfielder.
That leaves Liverpool – another move that makes little sense based on the style of play of the team. However, a move to their Merseyside rivals may make sense. They now have money and the ambition to move closer to the top six.
Fabregas has thrived in the Premier League and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he favoured a move to another English team. He is one of the best players in the division on his day and has the aggressive edge required to compete when things are going against his team.
Last season, Everton lacked a reliable creative midfielder and they suffered for that. Fabregas would solve that issue and signing the Spaniard would send a message to the rest of the league. It would be wise to mark this possible transfer as unlikely, as it would require a drop down the division, but they are his most likely destination in the Premier League.
AC Milan
The Italian giants have been taken over and the new owners seem to have the ambition of taking the Rossoneri back to the top of the European game. Franck Kessie, Matteo Musacchio and Ricardo Rodriguez have already joined the club this summer, representing a great start to the summer window. However, they have yet to sign the one big name player that will announce them as contenders in Serie A. Cesc Fabregas could be that man.
Italian paper Corriere dello Sport reported earlier this year that the Spanish international would be Milan’s priority target this summer and it is a move that would suit both parties. Although the Italian club are no longer the European force that they once were, they remain a huge name.
It would represent an exciting challenge to the midfielder and the style of play in Italy would suit him, as he would be given time on the ball in the middle of the park. If Fabregas does leave Chelsea this summer, Milan will be one of the frontrunners to sign him.
Bayern Munich
Xabi Alonso has now retired and that leaves a gaping hole in the Bayern Munich squad. His experience and passing ability will be difficult to replace, but Fabregas could be the perfect player to step into that role.
The Chelsea man has plenty of experience at the top of the European game and can create chances from the middle of the park. Although he isn’t precisely the same player as Alonso, there are clear similarities and that may be enough to tempt the Bundesliga champions to make a move.
This would certainly appeal to Fabregas as he would get the opportunity to play for one of the best teams in the world and it would represent a step up from Chelsea. Few clubs would offer that.
Fabregas is too young to move to either China or the MLS and he will know that himself. He still can compete at a high level and a move to Munich would represent a new challenge, as he has yet to play in the Bundesliga. There is a gap in the squad at the Allianz Arena and Fabregas is a good candidate to fill it.
