Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side got off to a winning start in his season opener with an impressive 3-1 win over Championship new boys Stoke City and the Elland Road faithful are already dreaming of a Premier League promotion push with their enigmatic Argentine boss at the helm.
It certainly was a dream start, matched with a brilliant performance and a new found energy which Leeds have been craving to have injected into their team in the past few seasons.
Bielsa has got the whole city of Leeds believing. However, it will be down to his team and a few star individuals to carry The Whites through the gruelling challenge that is the Championship campaign.
Here at The Boot Room, we have chosen three players who will be vital to Leeds’ Premier League promotion push this season.
Hernandez grabbed himself a goal in the season opener against Stoke and looks like he’s finally found himself a manager in Bielsa who will offer him the chance to flourish in this Leeds set up.
The Spaniard is arguably Leeds most technically sound player and, at 33 years of age, he brings a savvy bit of experience which is vital to securing promotion to the Premier League.
United’s player of the year in the 2017/18 season seems like he still has a lot to prove and he’ll be a vital cog in the Bielsa machine this year.
When Leeds signed Douglas from Wolves this summer for £3 million, many touted the move as an act of genius.
Douglas was a big reason as to why Wolves gained promotion to the Premier League last season, appearing 42 times for the West Midlands club, scoring five and assisting 15 along the way.
He displayed his set-piece prowess against Stoke in the season opener, brilliantly whipping in a ball for Cooper to head home and this is just a slice of what the 28-year-old is capable of.
Douglas’ winning mentality from last season will in no doubt carry over into this Leeds team.
With the chance to be the club’s leading man from left-back, he has the opportunity to rise to the occasion and achieve legendary status at Elland Road.
Berardi’s never say die attitude will be key to overcoming the gruelling Championship fixture list this season and it’s this kind of mentality that is desperately needed for any team’s promotion push.
His footballing intelligence is apparent to see, and the defender reads the game as well as any other player in the league.
It’ll be up to Bielsa to get the very best out of the Swiss international; and if he manages to do so, expect great things.
