Vincent Janssen

There’s no denying that it’s been tough for the 22-year-old since arriving in the English top-flight from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar last summer as he’s struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Janssen arrived as a prolific striker, scoring 27 times in just 34 matches in the Eredivisie last season after impressing in the lower Dutch leagues, but this form has failed to materialise at Tottenham.

For a £17 million transfer fee it was clear that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino had a lot of faith in Janssen, bringing him in as just the second recognised striker in the ranks at White Hart Lane.

But the 22-year-old made just seven starts this season and, despite making 20 cameo appearances from the bench, he only managed one goal from open play and just 13 shots on target in 27 games.

Even when talisman Harry Kane got injured and missed a number of league matches in early April, Pochettino’s faith in Janssen was clearly gone and he instead started Heung-Min Son as a forward.

Coming to London with a reputation for solid two-footed play, good hold-up abilities in front of a defence and good movement, the attributes have been seen far too little for a side near the top.

It’s not like the young forward hasn’t been given enough opportunities to impress – and in all fairness it hasn’t been for his lack of effort – but if Tottenham are wanting to challenge even closer for the Premier League title next season they need a goal-scorer that’s proven in the big leagues.
