Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool go into the season hoping to consolidate their top four finish last season and have a crack at their first European campaign since 2014. The likes of Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane are well known stars for the Reds, but who else should fans keep an eye out for this season?
Mohamed Salah
The big money signing from Roma this summer, Salah has a point to prove in the Premier League after a disappointing spell at Chelsea before returning to Serie A. His pre-season form has been blistering, immediately hitting up a fantastic connection with his fellow forwards.
Likely to start the season on the right hand side, with Sadio Mane on the left, Salah will use his pace and trickery to give Premier League left-backs nightmares throughout 2017/18. Liverpool lacked depth in this position last season and Salah could be the man to help them establish themselves in the top four.
Dominic Solanke
The star of England’s under 20 World Cup victory this summer, Solanke had agreed a move to Anfield from Chelsea before the tournament even begun. In pre-season, he has continued that form with two fine headed goals against quality opposition like Athletic Bilbao and Hertha Berlin.
Solanke has shown with his work rate that he is prepared to drift wide and drop deep, something that Klopp is keen on and that has made Roberto Firmino first choice up-front. With Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge failing to show that kind of flexibility, he could see himself climbing the pecking order quickly.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
The teenager is set to start the season as first choice with Nathaniel Clyne ruled out, and he could make a real case for himself. Having made his breakthrough last season, he will want to build on that in this campaign and many believe that he could prove to be a real threat to Clyne’s place in the squad.
Confident and a threat going forward, his deliveries are as good if not better than the England international’s. He is also assured and reliable defensively, with only rare errors highlighting his inexperience. With game time he will only get better, and Jurgen Klopp seems prepared to give him that.
