The two clubs have already been in contact over Everton signing the 27-year-old from United, and despite no formal agreement being made yet it seems for all the world that this is a done deal.

Schneiderlin, who played under Koeman during their time at Southampton, has only played a total of 11 minutes of Premier League football this campaign for the Red Devils and it is believed that Mourinho won’t try to block a move to Goodison Park if, and when, Everton come calling.

The French international has only been at Old Trafford for 18 months but has struggled to stake a sustained claim for a first-team spot, constantly playing as back-up for Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and United’s new record-signing Paul Pogba.

Schneiderlin was also absent from Manchester United’s squad that travelled to Crystal Palace last week, and it is understood that a deal is coming ever closer to being sealed.

With Gareth Barry nearing the end of his career at the age of 35, and James McArthur picking up an injury in the Merseyside Derby earlier this week, Schneiderlin’s appointment would bring some energy to the Everton midfield and allow a misfiring Ross Barkley the opportunity to operate further up the field, offering more support to Lukaku.

His previous time under Koeman at St Mary’s would also help the Frenchman settle quickly at Goodison Park, and this is exactly what Everton need if they are to mount a late European challenge.
