Three players Chelsea should target during the January transfer window

Radja Nainggolan

The Belgian midfielder was linked with the club during the summer and it is unlikely that Conte’s interest has gone away. Chelsea now play with Ngolo Kante and Nemanja Matic in midfield, which provides the perfect link between the defence and attack.

It is good to have two robust midfielders as it provides the attackers more freedom to attack, as they know that they have two excellent ball winners protecting the back four, therefore the risk of being countered is decreased.

The problem Chelsea have in their current squad is that they have nobody that can play a similar midfield role if one of the aforementioned players are injured. Cesc Fabregas did well at Manchester City, but he is nowhere near as effective.

Conte will want to add another complete midfielder over the next two windows and Nainggolan could be the perfect fit. He is strong in the tackle and has a tireless work rate that allows him to cover a lot of ground. That makes him perfect for the role, but he has added quality on the ball that would provide another dimension to Chelsea’s game.

He has a powerful shot from range and is a much better passer than either Matic or Kante. It would be a difficult deal to do as Roma won’t want to sell and Nainggolan is happy in the Italian capital. However, he is approaching the peak years of his career and he will want to challenge for major honours. That is much more likely at Stamford Bridge as Roma are still some way behind Juventus in Italy.
