Three players Chelsea should target during the January transfer window

They are going to enter the New Year as the favourites for the Premier League title, but it is believed that Antonio Conte will want to buy from a position of strength, providing his side with the momentum to push on in the second half of the season.

This is understandable, especially considering the formation change that has been implemented by the Italian. Their squad wasn’t designed for a 3-4-3 system when the Italian took over and there are further additions that are required to ensure he has good cover across the pitch.

Oscar is expected to leave to join a Chinese club, which should provide Conte with a significant budget to fund his own moves in the market.

Here at The Boot Room we take a look at three potential targets for Antonio Conte’s side over the next month…

Virgil van Dijk

Chelsea have five senior players that are capable of playing centre back, but there are concerns surrounding many of them. John Terry is likely to depart at the end of the season and doesn’t totally suit playing in a three-man defence.

Kurt Zouma is still recovering from a serious injury, while Gary Cahill is seen as the weak link in the current centre back trio. Antonio Conte won’t be entirely happy with the options available to him and will know that he needs to strengthen that position if they are to continue progressing.

Van Dijk would be the perfect signing for Chelsea and would significantly improve their starting eleven. He has everything to become one of the best centre backs in the world. The Dutchman has an intimidating physique that allows him to dominate in the air, while his reading of the game is superb.

As is the norm with many Dutch players, he is comfortable with the ball at his feet and excellent at launching attacks either with his forward runs or good passing range. He is an intelligent defender and would be able to adapt quickly to the formation used by Chelsea.

At the age of 25, he has room to improve and would be a great purchase for around the £35 million mark. There will be plenty of clubs interested in him, but Chelsea need to be one of them.
