Michael Essien

Let’s go a little left field with our next suggestion. Money may be in short supply for David Moyes in January but, as his purchase of Victor Anichebe demonstrated at the start of the season, there is some value in the host of players that are currently without a club.

The list includes the likes of Joleon Lescott, Joe Cole and Emanuel Adebayor – all players with Premier League experience that are in search of a contract and may still have something to offer a team struggling near the foot of the table. Shopping in the bargain basement is not exactly an awe-inspiring prospect, but it may be something that Moyes has to delve into if he does not get significant financial backing when the transfer window re-opens.

Michael Essien, the former Chelsea midfielder, is probably the most notable player who currently retains a place on the ‘out of contract’ list. The Ghanaian powerhouse is a legendary figure at Stamford Bridge, a former African Player of the Year winner (2006) and has won every trophy honour at club level in European Football. However, he has been without a club since being released in the summer by Panathinaikos.

At 34-years-of-age, Essien’s days as an all-action box-to-box central midfield player are all but over, but he has made it clear in recent months that he believes his playing career is far from over. Injuries have been an issue over recent seasons, but if Sunderland can get him fit and playing regularly then he will certainly offer the current squad a boost in terms of both experience and quality. Sure, purchasing the aging Ghanaian may not be a long-term solution, but in the short-term he may just provide The Black Cats with that little boost that brings them a step closer to safety.
