Three players Southampton should target from this summer’s Euros

Nikola Kalinic

Kalinic has been representing Croatia at Euro 2016 and, despite the crowd trouble him and his teammates had to endure, they topped their group after beating Spain 2-1 in their final group match.

The striker scored a fine back-heel equaliser that set his country on their way to recording a fantastic victory. Blackburn Rovers fans will remember Kalinic with very little fondness, as the 28-year-old had a poor two-year spell at Ewood Park between 2009-2011.

Southampton have the likes of Shane Long, Charlie Austin, Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez as striker options, but with Pelle looking likely to leave, the Saints will be in need of a new target man for their trusted 4-2-3-1 formation.

Kalinic, currently at Fiorentina, is 6ft 2in and scored 12 goals in 25 league appearances for the Italian club last season. It is a return healthy enough to be a strong signing for the club.

Like Pelle, there is more to his game than just scoring. The ability to hold up the ball and bring other players into the action is a key part of the Italian’s game and if Kalinic was able to replicate that kind of style, fans at St Mary’s would definitely welcome him.
