Three players Newcastle United should sign on deadline day
Newcastle United have had a frustrating window, with Rafa Benitez regularly airing his grievances in the media. The final day will be crucial on Tyneside and set the mood for the upcoming season. There have been rumours about Dwight Gayle leaving, but they would need to find a suitable replacement first. The Magpies’ boss will want to add a couple more players as well. Here are three players they should sign on deadline day:
Rafa Benitez has been keen to add a new goalkeeper since the transfer window opens. He isn’t enamoured by his current options and wants to add a more reliable number one with Premier League experience. It would also be preferable if they were comfortable with the ball at their feet and capable of launching attacks from deep. There are few options left on the market, but one is Michel Vorm.
The Dutchman is the number two at Tottenham and could be tempted to leave North London for regular first-team football. It is a World Cup year and although the Netherlands have yet to qualify for it, there is a chance that they will. If they do, Vorm will have a great chance of becoming their number one, but he would need to be playing regularly. He has the experience that Benitez wants and is an effective distributor of the ball. Newcastle should ask the question at least.
The Argentine has been linked with a move to Tyneside as the Chronicle reported earlier this week that the club were mulling over a list of left-backs and his name was on it. Paul Dummett is unlikely to return until November and that leaves Newcastle short in that position. It would be a huge risk if they weren’t to make a significant play for on.
Tagliafico has played once for Argentina and is regarded as one of the best defenders playing in his homeland. He has experience captaining Independiente and would be a shrewd, low-cost addition for the Magpies. There would be doubts regarding his ability to transition to the Premier League, but he is a solid defender and one that would benefit from Benitez’s coaching.
If Dwight Gayle is allowed to leave, Newcastle will have to find a good replacement, otherwise they would risk weakening their squad on the final day. The Mail reported earlier this month that the Magpies were interested in taking Michy Batshuayi on loan, but he wasn’t available at that time. Fernando Llorente could join Chelsea on deadline day and that would shift the Belgian down the pecking order. If that was the case, a move for the former Marseille striker could be a real possibility.
This might seem unlikely, but Benitez has strong contacts at Chelsea and they would be willing to loan him one of their players, as he is trusted to develop them. Batshuayi might not be in favour at Stamford Bridge now, but they wouldn’t see him as a lost cause. He could still have a part to play in the future and a loan to St James’ Park could be a good move for all parties.
