Tom Cairney
This would be a more realistic signing to add competition to the midfield areas, but it would be a more difficult deal to do as Cairney is the main man at Fulham. He is a creative midfielder, who has shown his consistency for the Cottagers this season.
There have been several occasions where he has run the game and he is a major reason why the West London club are challenging for a play-off spot. As well as his ability to dominate matches, the midfielder has an eye for goal as displayed by his total of five goals this season.
Cairney is able to play on the right wing or in the centre and that versatility would appeal to Rafa Benitez.
Although he has mainly plied his trade in the Championship, he could certainly make the step up and has the mentality to become a success in the Premier League. Fulham will be hoping that it is with them and they won’t want to sell him in January, especially to another Premier League side.
That said, Newcastle are an attractive club to join at the moment and they are able to convince Premier League players to make the step down as they did with Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle. Therefore, they would back themselves to attract Cairney if he was targeted in January.
It would be a risky signing considering his limited top flight experience, but his performances this season suggest it would be one worth making.
