Three players Liverpool should sign on deadline day
Liverpool have been busy during the final week of the transfer window and they are likely to be active on deadline day. They have agreed a deal to sign Naby Keita and he will arrive next summer, but their focus will now be on recruits for this campaign. Jurgen Klopp knows he needs a bigger squad if his team is going to challenge on multiple fronts. Here are three players the Reds shoud target on deadline day:
Virgil van Dijk
The Dutchman has been a priority target for Liverpool since the start of the summer, but it has been a frustrating chase for the Reds. Southampton don’t want to sell the defender and have been difficult to negotiate with. They will have a preference not to sell to Jurgen Klopp’s side after conflict earlier in the summer, but the player is keen on a move to Merseyside. The Evening Standard report that the club are still confident of signing the centre-back and will make a renewed push on deadline day.
It has been clear that the Southampton defender is their only defensive target and he would be a great addition to the squad. There are few better or more complete centre-backs in the Premier League and Liverpool need to strengthen that area of the pitch. Dejan Lovren isn’t good enough to be a starter for a team hoping to challenge for major honours. This deal has to be a priority for the Reds on the final day.
It has been a slow window for Liverpool and supporters were growing concerned by the lack of business, but that has changed in recent days. Thomas Lemar has emerged as a target and the club are pushing hard to bring the Monaco midfielder to Anfield. The Mail reported yesterday that club officials had flown out to thrash out a £74 million deal that could see Divock Origi go the other way on loan.
The French international was a prominent target for Arsenal, but he would be a much better fit at Liverpool. Klopp wants to sign him as he is tactically flexible and able to play a number of different roles. This creates competition for places across the pitch and helps the manager carry out an effective rotation policy. Lemar can play as a left attacker, advanced playmaker or box-to-box midfielder and he would thrive in the fluid system played by the Reds.
Angel di Maria
This hasn’t been rumoured in the media, but if Liverpool have to source a replacement for Philippe Coutinho on deadline day, the Argentine would be a great addition. PSG have been major players in the summer transfer window. However, they now need to balance their squad and they may opt to sell the former Manchester United player. Sport reported yesterday that Barcelona were close to recruiting him.
It is likely they view him as a back-up option to Coutinho. Therefore, if Barcelona manage to sign the Brazilian instead, it would make Di Maria available and Liverpool would be smart to move for him. He has experience at the highest level and remains an excellent player. If they managed to sign him, it would send a statement to the rest of Europe and Coutinho will quickly be forgotten about.
