Chris Smalling
Leicester City’s defence, which looked so solid last year through the partnership of Wes Morgan and Robert Huth, has fallen to pieces over the first half of the current Premier League season.
With 29 goals conceded in 17 league games, when by comparison they only conceded 36 across the whole of their title-winning campaign, the Foxes are in desperate need of an experienced defender to help the Club stop leaking goals.
This is where Manchester United’s Chris Smalling could step into the picture, and provide a wealth of Premier League experience from his time at one of the biggest clubs in England.
With United seemingly getting closer to signing Victor Lindelof from Benfica in January, and Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Daley Blind all preferred in defence to the ex-Maidstone United player, it’s hard to see Smalling remaining at Old Trafford if he wants to play first-team football.
Smalling, who has played 21 times for England, could rekindle his career via a move to the Premier League champions, and could put himself back into England contention if all goes well.
He could fit in alongside either Morgan or Huth too; Smalling is strong in the air, and comfortable enough on the ball to be able to play it out from the back, as well as possessing the ability to pose a threat from set pieces after scoring seven times for United.
The move would be a gamble for Ranieri, as the 27-year-old hasn’t played first-team football much this season, but it could certainly pay off and see the Foxes’ defence become a bit more stubborn.
