Three signings Everton should still make this summer

Axel Witsel

With reports suggesting this week that Witsel has requested to leave his current club Zenit St Petersburg, there is no doubt that this is one that should be pursued strongly by Everton.

Although the club have an abundance of central midfielders, the likes Muhamed Bešic, Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverley have been far from convincing in their spells at Everton. They might be in a strong situation numerically, but need an injection of quality to make the step to the next level.

This leaves Koeman with James McCarthy and Gareth Barry, and whilst the former has produced some impressive performances over the last three seasons, Barry is 35-years-old will surely be thinking about retirement soon. In all honesty, it is slightly concerning that a player most certainly in the twilight of his career still plays such a pivotal role for Everton. This is something which needs to change.

Witsel would provide strength and height in the centre of the park for Koeman’s side and would fill the void that Marouane Fellaini left following his departure to Manchester United in 2013.

Zenit are reportedly asking for no less than €25 million, which is easily payable for Everton following their fresh influx of money, but with Juventus also eyeing the Belgium international as a replacement for Paul Pogba, the Toffees may have to fight for the signature.
