One of the summer’s longest running transfer sagas finally appears to be coming to an end with Toby Alderweireld reportedly closing in on a £60 million move to Old Trafford to join Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
The Mirror say that the deal will be struck before the transfer deadline passes and may even be named this weekend, leaving Tottenham with little time to find a replacement if they are to look to the market.
The Belgian international has been frozen out by Mauricio Pochettino amid the dispute over his contract which has led to his exit, so the coach is already aware of his options.
“I wanted to prove something to myself, show that the period before the tournament in which I – for whatever reason – did not play, was unjustified. I wanted to show that I’m still Toby, same as in November.”
Eric Dier is most likely to take his spot in the starting line-up but his departure will result in a shortage in central defence, so who could replace him?
Ben Davies
Already first choice at left-back, the Welshman has at times played in the middle on the left side of a back three in the past and has done so again this pre-season.
Alderweireld would usually occupy the right hand side in such a set-up but Davies may be the most experienced option available to Pochettino.
Cameron Carter-Vickers
After successful loan spells at Ipswich Town and Sheffield United, the USA international has returned to north London ready to fight for a place in the Premier League this season.
A physically dominating figure with good technical ability, the 20-year-old knows that his time to break into the squad is now or never and he must capitalise on Alderweireld’s exit if he is to make it at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Juan Foyth
Another 20-year-old, Foyth is currently sidelined by a short-term injury but will be keen to add to his eight first team appearances for the club upon his return. Despite that figure, he is yet to feature in the Premier League.
The Argentinian is highly rated by Pochettino and may top the list ahead of Carter-Vickers as he has in the past. He will be hoping that the injury will not rob him of the chance to do that.
