Wayne Rooney
Rooney is an easy target for criticism at the moment, but the future of this team will almost certainly be without him. The England skipper has admitted that he no longer possesses the pace nor explosiveness to lead the line (though Zlatan Ibrahimovic doesn’t possess much of either). He hasn’t convinced in central midfield, and the only position he can possibly have is a kind of free role between the two.
However, United have just spent close to £90 million on Paul Pogba, and this area of the field is very much his territory. Rooney could be used as very reliable back up for him, but he is unlikely to be satisfied with this and given the scrutiny he attracts, Mourinho will surely have to consider if he is worth the aggravation.
Rooney has been linked with a move back to Everton, and you get the sense Mourinho could do far more surgery on this team without his lingering presence in the squad. He has certainly been underappreciated over the years, but doesn’t justify a place in the team at the moment. It might be time for a golden handshake and a carriage clock.
