Such was the length of Middlesbrough’s absence from the Premier League it was easy to forget that they were somewhat of a bogey team for the Reds for a number of years before their relegation in 2009.

Prior to their trip to the Riverside last night, Liverpool had not won away to Boro since March 2002, and had only scored one goal there in the seven intervening trips, courtesy of Fernando Torres in 2008.

Therefore, Liverpool’s three goals means that they managed to do in one night what previous Reds teams could not do in seven years, three times over.
