431 – Mourinho breaks away hoodoo
At the fifth-time of asking this season, Jose Mourinho’s side managed to find the back of the net against a Premier League side in the top-five away from home.
Wayne Rooney’s effort from close range was the first time in 431 minutes of football that Manchester United scored against their rivals, ending a woeful recent record against the big clubs.
0-0 draws against both Liverpool and Manchester City have come amidst respective 2-0 and 4-0 defeats at Arsenal and Chelsea as United have struggled to get a foothold in key games on the road.
Considering how they kept Chelsea at bay at Old Trafford it’s perhaps surprising that they’ve been unable to replicate this form away from home; but it seems that Mourinho alters his tactics when visiting the top teams – looking to act more on the counter – and evidently this hasn’t worked out as planned this year.
With one eye on the Europa League final it perhaps wasn’t the most surprising result on Sunday, but if Mourinho wants to be challenging at the top next season he’ll need to change this away record.
