Seven successive semi-finals
In each of his last seven years as a football manager, Pep Guardiola has reached the last four in the Champions League.
His current side’s European record is however somewhat less impressive than that of Barcelona and Bayern Munich; City have progressed beyond the quarter-finals only once.
Monaco have also struggled in the competition, only advancing beyond the last-16 on one occasion since their 9-year absence and the runners-up medal in 2004.
Whilst most commentators would accept that the current Manchester City side lacks quality compared to Guardiola’s previous teams; having a top manager with years of experience in two-legged, knockout games should help the club fulfil aspirations of becoming a consistent European heavyweight.
