Danny Welbeck goal – 57 minutes
Making his first Premier League start of the season, after returning from a long-term injury, Danny Welbeck provided Arsenal with their most positive moment of the match.
For once it was the North-London club who threatened with a counter attack, with the side quickly finding Sanchez in space.
Continuing his influence on the game since being brought on, Sanchez played a through-ball to the English forward, timed and weighted to perfection. This allowed him to remain onside and cleverly lift the ball above Mignolet who had gone to ground as he rushed out from goal.
Ragnar Klavan slid desperately in an attempt to clear the ball but was ultimately helpless, watching it bounce beyond him as Arsenal halved the deficit.
The goal gave the Gunners a chance to chase the game as familiar tensions arose around Anfield. In the latter stages the game became increasingly stretched, Arsenal desperate to equalise and Liverpool unwilling, or unable, to just defend their slim lead.
In the end, Wenger’s men were made to pay for their chasing of the game. Another Liverpool counter attack resulted in Divock Origi teeing up Georginio Wijnaldum to all but finish the game on 91 minutes.
Liverpool continue their impressive form against the top-6, and Wijnaldum keeps scoring in the big games.
Arsenal now find themselves outside the top-four and will have to improve against their Champions League-chasing rivals if they are to qualify as usual.
