Jermain Defoe hits the bar – 78 minutes
Other than a short period at the start of the second half, Sunderland spent this game defending. The 4-5-1 formation chosen by David Moyes signaled early on how the match would play out. As expected, particularly in the continued absence of Victor Anichebe, Jermain Defoe usually found himself isolated.
Yet despite being rarely involved, through no fault of his own, Defoe could have leveled the scores with just over ten minutes remaining. A quick counter-attack of their own, instigated by Adnan Januzaj, finally gave Defoe possession in the opposition’s box. With two defenders between himself and the goal, and others arriving, the Black Cats’ main man shimmied himself enough space to shoot, agonisingly hitting the underside of the bar.
Had the match been even with such little time left, Sunderland may well have been going home with a point.
