Everton and Sunderland returned to action on Saturday, facing each other in the Premier League after a two-week break.
The Merseyside club were looking to pick up where they had left off, having shown the league’s joint best form in the weeks prior to the fortnight away from the action.
David Moyes, meanwhile, had the job of overturning a dismal record against his old club, having lost 3/3 since leaving. Here are three key moments from the match…
Idrissa Gana Gueye goal – 40 minutes
Having dominated the first half in both possession and chances created, Everton finally broke the deadlock 5 minutes before the break. Both Ronald Koeman and home supporters will have been relieved to see their control of the game result in a half-time lead.
As the game became slightly more stretched, Tom Davies picked out a superb pass to Seamus Coleman on the right wing. The Irish international took advantage of space left by Bryan Oviedo, quickly playing the ball to Idrissa Gana Gueye on the edge of the box, who slammed home his first Premier league goal, to give his side the lead.
Sunderland had played poorly throughout the half, offering almost nothing going forward. Yet if they had survived until half-time, a frustrated Goodison Park crowd could have provided the ideal platform for a much-needed positive result. Certainly, the timing of the goal was crucial to the game.
