English football has become incredibly competitive in recent years following the arrival of incomprehensible amounts of foreign investment and some of the best managers from world football. Where once only a handful of clubs seriously considered themselves as realistic challengers for trophies and silverware, there are now a host of teams that fancy their chances. United are a football club that thrive on success and the League Cup provides the perfect opportunity for Mourinho to seize and lift aloft a cup in his first season.

United’s reward for seeing off the challenge of Manchester City in the previous round is a favourable home-tie against struggling West Ham United. They are expected to win and in the process comfortably progress in the semi-finals, however, West Ham beat second-placed Chelsea in their previous cup-tie making this something of a banana-skin.
