A difficult away trip that could define how well City fans’ New Year celebrations go. A trip to Anfield is always one of the standout fixtures of any season, and this should be a fast-paced, frenetic encounter. What will be interesting is how much City and Guardiola have learnt from their trip to Spurs when they were well beaten. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will employ similar tactics against City; pressing high and trying to stop them at source. During his time at Bayern Munich, Guardiola once played Javi Martinez up front against Borussia Dortmund and hit him with long balls in order to bypass the press. Don’t bet against him coming up with another left field strategy should Liverpool continue the fine form they are currently enjoying. City have a miserable record on Merseyside, and haven’t won at Anfield in the league since a Nicolas Anelka brace gave them victory in May 2003. They have lost their last three league visits there, and City fans will view this fixture as one of their hardest games of the season.
