19 – Fellaini sees red as United hold out

You can’t say that it hasn’t been coming at some point this season – it almost comes with the type of player he is – but Marouane Fellaini left United supporters with hearts in mouths for the final fifteen minutes of the Manchester derby after needlessly being sent off for a headbutt on Sergio Aguero.

Only 19 seconds before the Belgian had been booked for a trip but it appeared that a red mist came over the United midfielder and left his side even more under the cosh for the rest of the match.

Fortunately for him, make-shift centre-back pairing Eric Bailly and Daley Blind were excellent all evening and managed to keep City at bay to secure a pivotal points for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Bailly has been exceptional since his arrival this season and he teamed up with Blind to make 13 clearances, five interceptions and five blocks; strong – but fair – in the tackle, they both stood up to the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Leroy Sane and didn’t allow City to play with any sort of fluidity or pace.

Blind himself had come in for a bit of stick after his substitute performance against Anderlecht in the Europa League last week, but he made nine of Manchester United’s 27 clearances alone.

With two of Manchester United’s tough opponents conquered in their run-in, their unbeaten run remains intact and extends to 24 matches – equalling their longest ever run from the 2010/11 campaign – and it’s now onto Swansea City to continue momentum ahead of the trip to Arsenal.
