Manchester City couldn’t find a way past a resilient Manchester United defence as the two fierce rivals had to settle for a point in a tepid encounter in the race for the top four on Thursday evening.

The visitors will take the short trip back to Salford the happier side after dealing with wave after wave of City attacks, and as far as he’s concerned Jose Mourinho’s pre-match game plan worked to perfection.

The result did little to alter the look of the Premier League table – or enhance either side’s top four prospects – but Manchester City closed the gap on third-placed Liverpool to just a solitary point.
