Three Iceland stars who could make the move to play in England

Kolbeinn Sigþórsson

The man who led Iceland’s line during the Euros and is closing in on Eidur Gudjohnsen’s goalscoring record (25 to Sigþórsson’s 22) in only half the caps (88 to the latter’s 44) could be a worthwhile investment for any top Championship side willing to take a risk. The 26-year-old is coming into his prime as a striker and is currently playing Ligue 1 football for Nantes, though only found the net three times last season in 26 appearances, though this could be down to a particularly injury hit season for the Icelandic striker.

Despite not being prolific in recent domestic seasons, he hit 31 goals in 80 appearances for Dutch giants Ajax and 15 goals in 32 appearances for AZ Alkmaar, neither of which is easy. Sigþórsson managed to score twice at the Euros, the winner against England and a consolation goal in the 5-2 defeat to France and led the line well in other appearances.

Iceland’s vice captain certainly impressed over the tournament and maybe another name that we will see more of in the future, as he looks likely to smash Eidur Gudjohnsen’s all time record for Iceland with at least half of his career still ahead of him. With English teams always on the lookout for a line leader striker, Sigþórsson could be a name we will have to get used to pronouncing as the teams begin to circle around the big number nine.
