Yann Sommer
A player who hasn’t really been mentioned amongst Evertonians this summer, Yann Sommer is a player who could come in and do a good job as Koeman’s new No.1. The Swiss international has spent the past two season in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach, which saw him end an eleven-year association with FC Basel.
Sommer came through the youth setup with Swiss Super League side Basel, where he played 133 league games. His first two years were spent with Basel’s U21 squad, before moving up to the club’s first team, where he was involved for seven years, until 2014.
Three seasons of the seven however, were spent away on loan. The first spell was with FC Vaduz on a two-year loan, before moving to Grasshopper upon returning for a year. He won the Swiss Super League four times, in consecutive seasons between 2010 to 2014.
Last season Sommer played 32 Bundesliga games, keeping five clean sheets. He averaged 1.56 saves per goal conceded and 2.63 per game. He also finished the season with an impressive claim success of 96%.
In the Champions League, his side didn’t fare very well. Monchengladbach played six games, won one, drew two and lost two. Sommer featured in all six games, keeping one clean sheet. He averaged just 1.24 saves per goal, though, he did average 2.83 saves per game.
The 27-year-old also featured for Switzerland at EURO 2016. His side escaped the group but lost to Poland on penalties in the round of 16. Sommer featured in all four games, conceding just two goals, keeping two clean sheets.
He averaged a very impressive 4.50 saves per goal conceded, with 2.25 per game. The 6’0” ‘keeper also attained a claim success rate of 100%. For many, he was the goalkeeper included in a lot of ‘team of the group stage’ teams.
It would be fantastic to see Sommer sign at Goodison Park this summer, for many believe that he would be an upgrade on Robles and Stekelenburg, and would not demand a huge fee. Although he doesn’t have any experience in England, he has it in abundance in the club European tournaments and internationally.
