Three Everton players who should be more involved this season
The season has begun, and a lot has changed at Everton. There’s new guidance under the duo of Ronald and Erwin Koeman, Goodison Park is undergoing a facelift and there is new hope from Evertonians.
Above all else, the squad looks a lot stronger than last season and the belief from Everton fans looks to have been instilled into the payers. Everton have started the season well, seven points from a possible nine, unbeaten, it’s exactly the start Everton needed following two years of misery in the Premier League.
Despite new signings coming in, five senior additions, I look at three existing players who I believe should feature a lot more this season.
Tom Davies
Brought into the first team at Everton only at the tail end of last season, Davies is a player Evertonians hold with high regard. The 18-year-old made his Everton debut in a 1-1 draw with Southampton, where he impressed coming off the bench late on.
Following the sacking of Roberto Martinez, David Unsworth, Everton’s Under 23 manager, took charge of the final game of the season. Davies saw himself in the starting lineup and played out the full 90 minutes in a man of the match performance.
Then 17-year-old, Davies earned rave reviews from fans and Unsworth alike, who described Davies as ‘everything’ you’d want from an Everton midfielder. The all-action midfielder is currently England Under 19 captain, progressing from holding the captaincy at Under 17 level, which saw him invited to train with the senior national team last October.
Despite signing a five-year-deal early August, his place in Everton’s match-day squad was at threat – the continuous links with central midfielders during the transfer window, cause uncertainty of Davies’ place this season.
However, no late moves for a central midfielder came off. As bad as some Evertonians believe this to be, I think Davies is clearly a great prospect and a good option within the squad.
Davies has featured once in the Premier League so far this season, having been in the match-day squad on two occasions, but has played in three wins of Everton Under 23’s four games.
