Chris Smalling
A third potential signing for Conte to make would involve purchasing a player from rivals Manchester United. With new manager Jose Mourinho taking charge this summer, Chris Smalling may find himself not receiving as many opportunities in the first team as he has done in previous years.
The former non-league performer has evolved into one of England’s best centre-backs, and has now featured at the last two major tournaments for his country. At the age of 26, he still has a long career ahead of him, but currently does not have a natural leader partnering him at the back.
By joining Chelsea, he would not only be able to continue evolving his game under the guidance of John Terry; one of the best centre-backs in Premier League History, but would have the guidance of Antonio Conte who notoriously focuses on defensive stability.
Another added incentive would be for him to partner Gary Cahill. The pair have already found themselves as the first choice centre-halves for Roy Hodgson and England at Euro 2016, so to have the opportunity for the pair to partner each other at club level would benefit themselves and English football significantly.
