Matt Miazga
A position where Chelsea struggled last term was at centre-back, with key members of the title-winning squad just the season previously made to look like inadequate players. Conceding 53 league goals really summed up the remarkable transformation the Chelsea team had undergone.
As the 2016/17 season edges closer, it is clear that the new gaffer Antonio Conte has plans to bring back stellar and resolute defending back to Stamford Bridge. One player who will be hoping to shine under this new management is 21-year-old Matt Miazga.
After joining from New York Red Bulls in January 2016, Miazga has taken to life in London extremely well. Despite only picking up a handful of appearances towards the end of the season, Chelsea players, including Asmir Begovic, have spoken highly of Miazga and his improvements on the training ground even in the short time he has been at the club (http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/06/26/chelsea-goalkeeper-asmir-begovic-expecting-big-things-from-matt/page/1-2/).
Standing at a commanding 6 ft 4, Miazga is surprisingly good on the ball, but also likes to mix up his short passing with long, pin-point balls for attacking players to run on to. Having worked with Leonardo Bonucci and Georgio Chiellini with his last two managerial roles, Conte is a big fan of this style of defending.
Like the youngsters mentioned earlier on, Miazga still has faults to his game, but with the experience within the Chelsea defence and a new management set-up at the club, it could be a pivotal season in the career of Matt Miazga.
