Three best and worst performers in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United

Three Worst

Mohamed Elneny

Picked ahead of summer purchase Granit Xhaka, Elneny was brought in to add extra mobility and another midfield engine on a big Old Trafford pitch. The Egyptian usually moves the ball forward quickly and accurately, starting counter attacks and facilitating the game for his team mates. However, he struggled to exert any influence on this game and could not supply Mesut Ozil between the lines. Wenger has been criticised in the past for not taking the opposition into account enough, but he was arguably too cautious in his team selection. The weakest part of United’s team was the back four, and Arsenal may have been better served by a more positive approach. Elneny, signed from Basel in January, is a very good squad player and a strong all-rounder. However, when he plays alongside Coquelin the onus is on him to distribute the ball and his passing is not in the same class as Santi Cazorla or Xhaka.

Nacho Monreal

Monreal was probably the Premier League’s most consistent defender last season but has had more difficulty this term. Arsenal have conceded a number of goals from their left flank, and Mata’s goal came from Herrera finding a pocket of space in this channel. The Spaniard was outstanding against Spurs before the international break, and in his defence there has not been much protection in front of him. Alex Iwobi has occupied the left wing spot, and Aaron Ramsey started there against United. Both like to drift into central positions, and so aren’t always in a position to get back and help Monreal. He was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty when he put his arm across Valencia as he was slipping.

Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey is still feeling his way back into action following a hamstring injury, and still looks a few games short of full sharpness. The Welshman has all the attributes you could possibly want in a midfielder, without being outstanding in any one department. His main strengths are his engine and late runs into the penalty area, but he sometimes struggles when he has to receive the ball in deep areas. Towards the end of the first half, he gave the ball straight to Paul Pogba deep in his own half and played Arsenal into trouble. Will want a spot in central midfield, but will have to move the ball far more smoothly if he is to get the nod in there.
