Georginio Wijnaldum
Georginio Wijnaldum represents a cut price option for Pochettino and Tottenham, after Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship. In a relegated team, Wijnaldum managed to score 11 goals and provide five assists, which from midfield is an impressive return. He can play in the centre or on the left hand side behind the striker, but he is also able to provide another option deeper for Tottenham, in centre midfield.
This could push Pochettino towards Wijnaldum, as Mason and Carroll were not adequate when they played last season. By spending less on the Dutchman, it would enable the Spurs boss to spend more on another striker, and after outlaying around £11 million for Victor Wanyama already. This may seem a wise move. Tottenham players already know how much of a threat Wijnaldum can be, after scoring 2 against them in the 5-1 demolition on the final day.
Wijnaldum has showcased his ability to thread defences with through balls, and would maybe register more assists with a prolific striker such as Kane ahead of him. However, his work-rate may deter Pochettino, as at times he was criticised for his work rate. Work rate is a key thing for Pochettino, and if Wijnaldum is seen as to not having that in his locker, the Spurs head coach will not be willing to invest in him. On the other hand, he offers a very realistic and cheap option, with the view to bolstering Tottenham’s attacking midfield options for the coming season, and he has proven he can contribute in terms of assists and goals in the Premier League.
