Three attacking midfielders Tottenham could sign to improve on last season

Marco Asensio

Although this transfer is slightly more unrealistic, Asensio could be a player that catches Pochettino’s eye. The Spaniard is 20-years-old, and spent the last season lighting up an Espanyol team that finished 13th. He created 10 goals last season, and also contributed 4 goals to his team’s cause. He is a clever young player, who uses the ball very well in the final third, hence his high number of assists over the season, and key passes in each game. The fact that he is very young will also be a major advantage, as Pochettino can mould him into the player that he is looking for, like he has done with Eric Dier and Dele Alli previously. Similar to Vazquez, Asensio can play anywhere behind the striker, but his most effective position is the number 10 role.

Given Real Madrid’s number of players that can play where Asensio plays, such as James Rodriguez and Isco, Asensio’s playing time in the first team may be limited. A buy back deal similar to the ones that they struck for Carvajal and Morata could be reached, although this may not be preferential for Spurs. If Tottenham were to pursue Asensio in this transfer window, the added level of dynamism and creativity in the number 10 position that he would bring may well be able to help unlock the door of defences that sit deep – an area in which Tottenham struggled at times last year.
