Three areas that Stoke City need to strengthen in January

Central Defence

Ryan Shawcross has been one of the most consistent and under-rated central defenders in the Premier League during the last decade. The one-time England international has been central to Stoke City’s success at the heart of their defence and, although he may not be the most aesthetically pleasing or technically efficient player around, he is undoubtedly a fantastic no-nonsense defender. However, The Potters have struggled to find a defensive partner for their captain – until now.

Bruno Martins-Indi arrived on loan from Porto on deadline day and has made an immediate impact in The Potteries. Powerful, physically intimidating and composed on the ball, the Dutch international has proven to be a shrewd acquisition by Mark Hughes and has produced a host of impressive performances when played in a central defensive role. Martins-Indi has immediately developed a solid partnership with Ryan Shawcross and Stoke will certainly be looking to secure his signature on a permanent contract before his loan deal expires in the summer.
