Right-Back
It is perhaps an indicator of Manchester United’s current lack of defensive talent that in their most recent fixture, a 3-1 victory over Swansea City, it was ex-England international winger Ashley Young who had to step in and start the game as a make-shift right-back. In the event, Swansea offered little offensive threat in what was a comfortable victory for Mourinho’s men, yet the possibility of Young having to continue in his new-found defensive role against better opposition is one that will have United supporters fearing the worst.
United may have invested heavily in offensive-minded recruits during the summer but they strangely chose to neglect some of the defensive deficiencies that have dogged the team for the best part of six months. Whilst Antonio Valencia offers a solid option, is he truly a world-class full-back in the same mould as Gary Neville? and what happens when he is absent? Are Ashley Young, Marcus Rojo or Phil Jones reliable alternatives? This is certainly one area that Mourinho will be looking to strengthen in January.
