Left wing
Yoan Gouffran has been the first choice on the left wing this season and he has been very good. He has done well to turn his Newcastle career around after a disappointing couple of years. However, he is a more hard working winger and doesn’t offer the dynamism that Newcastle sometimes need. Christian Atsu has played there at times, but he is better suited to playing on the right hand side as Rafa Benitez likes to play with inverted wingers. This is a position that they will look to strengthen in January and it will be well met by supporters as wingers are well received on Tyneside.
There is an opportunity for Newcastle to look for a first team player for next season as Gouffran’s contract expires at the end of the season. It looks unlikely that the Frenchman will be retained as he doesn’t have a long term future at the club. Robert Snodgrass is one player that has been mentioned as a possible target and he would be an excellent signing. He has been excellent for Hull City in the Premier League and would be able to do the same with Newcastle. However, he would need to be convinced to drop a division for the second half of the season. This is a deal that may be more likely in the summer.
