Three areas Manchester United need to strengthen in January

Left wing

Manchester United have an exciting front line with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all in fine form at the moment. They are three players that have achieved a lot on the continent and are now exciting supporters at Old Trafford. However, no player has made the left wing position their own. Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial have been in-and-out of the side, with neither showing the consistency to make that position their own. Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney have both been used there, but they are better in central areas. Meanwhile, Memphis Depay has rarely been used and is likely to leave the club in the coming window.

Mourinho looks for hard working wingers that can contribute goals and assists in attack. He normally needs to look for the unfinished article and mould them into the winger that he wants them to be. At Chelsea, he has done this with Arjen Robben, Damien Duff and Joe Cole. There are a number of exciting wingers on the continent and United will certainly be keeping an eye out for somebody to strengthen that position. There will still be hope among the fan-base that Martial can become the long term choice at left wing, but his lack of work rate appears to be an issue for Mourinho.
