2) Quality, rather than quantity, in defence
United have plenty of options at the back, but it is clear that Jose Mourinho does not trust a number of them. At one time or another, it has seemed certain that Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Daley Blind could all be on their way out.
For many of those names, there will be doubts over where they will be plying their trade come September, but such a turnaround in defensive players would be a major risk by Mourinho. Eric Bailly has settled in well and Antonio Valencia has excelled, but such instability would take time for new players to adapt.
It is clear that an upgrade is needed, with a real lack of world class defenders unlike in any other position in the squad at Old Trafford, but Mourinho must be careful not to splash the cash and see a range of average players rather than good quality ones. The depth is already there, but upgrades are required.
