Three areas Chelsea need to strengthen in January to win the title

Central defence

Cesar Azpilicueta has been a revelation since moving to a central defensive role, whilst David Luiz has proved all of his critics wrong and Gary Cahill has stepped up to the plate to become a key man for Antonio Conte. With the experience of John Terry and the potential of Kurt Zouma both struggling to even get a start, you could easily be mistaken for thinking that another defender is the last thing Chelsea need.

Reports indicate that Terry will not be given a new deal at the end of the season, whilst Cahill is no spring chicken at 31-years-old and David Luiz isn’t far behind at 29 years of age. It’s common knowledge that both can also suffer dips in form, and an addition here may be the key to ensuring that they remain at the top of their game with competition for places.

Virgil Van Dijk is the latest name to be linked, and his physical power would be welcome. With his leadership skills, he could fill the void when John Terry departs in the summer and try his best to fill some rather large boots left behind by the legend.
