Striker
Wenger has been accused of neglecting to buy a world-class striker, which is often cited as a key reason behind Arsenal’s failure to sustain a title challenge. All successful sides boast a prolific goalscorer. Barcelona have Lionel Messi, Real Madrid have Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester City have Sergio Aguero and Chelsea Diego Costa. The much-maligned Olivier Giroud has actually spearheaded the attack admirably for the Gunners, but now 30 years old, his best years may well be behind him. Most Arsenal supporters would argue he isn’t in the top echelon of strikers, either.
Alexis Sanchez has proved to be a revelation since being switched to an out-and-out attacking role, while Lucas Perez was signed from Deportivo La Coruna during the summer window and Danny Welbeck is on the road to recovery after sustaining a serious knee problem last season. But the suspicion remains that Arsenal lack enough quality attacking options, should they suffer an injury or two. In all likelihood, Wenger will not splash the cash on a striker this month, citing Welbeck’s return and even Theo Walcott’s ability to lead the line. But with their title ambitions still alive, doing so could just be the difference between success and failure.
