Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)
Guardiola might look to his old stomping ground in Bavaria for a solution to his full back problem, and Kimmich has emerged as one of the game’s most impressive utility men. Though he was mainly used as a midfielder under Guardiola, many feel his future lies further back in the team. Kimmich filled this void during the European Championships, solving a problem that has plagued Germany since the retirement of Philipp Lahm.
The conundrum for club and country is that he is currently playing very well as an attacking midfielder, scoring four Bundesliga goals under Carlo Ancelotti so far this term. Just 21, he has the energy, desire and technical quality to fit right in at Eastlands. Kimmich also possesses the flexibility to perform one of the many roles Guardiola might require throughout a season. The man himself waxed lyrical about Kimmich only this spring:
“I love this boy,” beamed the former Barcelona coach. “I like working with football players who want to learn and want to keep going. He has the desire, he has passion – he has absolutely everything.”
