'Thought his time at Arsenal was up': Alan Shearer left shocked Arteta didn't sell 'reckless' player

Alan Shearer says he has been surprised that midfielder Granit Xhaka has managed to turn his Arsenal career around.

Speaking to the Premier League’s official website, Shearer named Xhaka in his team of the season so far as we go into the unprecedented mid-season World Cup break.

But he said he thought Xhaka’s time at Arsenal was up and has credited the Swiss international with transforming himself.

First, we will have a look at what Shearer said, but it is also worth remembering the perception of Xhaka before the season started.

Shearer on Xhaka

He said: “My midfield, the first one is Granit Xhaka.

“The way he has returned to form in the Arsenal team under Arteta, when many including myself, thought his time at Arsenal was up.

“So the way he’s come back into there, showed great leadership qualities, and really is driving this Arsenal team forward.”

Xhaka has had his fair share of critics during his time in England and after Arsenal’s 2-0 loss at Newcastle last season, which all but cost them Champions League qualification, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher took aim at him.

Neville said he had been a ‘disgrace’ and ‘reckless’ at times for the Gunners, while Carragher urged him to do his talking on the pitch.

He is performing well now in an Arsenal team which is five points clear at the top of the Premier League, and will be looking to take that form into the World Cup, where his Switzerland side have been drawn against Brazil, Serbia and Cameroon.
