Luke Ayling jokingly asked when the Championship goal of the month for March is being announced after his sensational volley against Huddersfield Town last time out – and both Thomas Christiansen and a Fulham player responded.
Ayling, 28, is arguably in the form of his life for Leeds United this season as he continues to shine from the right side of the defence under Marcelo Bielsa. Not only is he remaining sturdy in defence, but Ayling has also contributed going forward.
The former Bristol City, Yeovil Town and Arsenal star has found the back of the net on four separate occasions, as well as contributing four assists during his 28 league and cup outings.
His latest goal, which has seemingly eclipsed his excellent effort against Birmingham City in the 5-4 win at St. Andrews, is a contender for goal of the month – and the defender joked on Instagram, asking when the announcement would be made.
Ayling, who was brought to Elland Road by Garry Monk in the summer of 2016 from Ashton Gate, has since clocked up 145 appearances for Leeds in all competitions. He is the club’s vice captain, and has a contract until the summer of 2023.
His Instagram post caused a stir, prompting reaction from former Leeds manager Christiansen – who described the strike as “first class”. Fulham star and former Bristol City teammate Joe Bryan claimed it could be “goal of the season”.
