Ally McCoist has made a ‘bizarre’ claim about Arsenal after watching them beat Newcastle United on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s men thrashed Newcastle 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium to keep themselves just two points off the pace in the hunt for the title.

Arsenal have been in free-scoring form in recent weeks, having netted 18 times in their last four Premier League games.

Their recent upturn in form has put them right back in the mix for the title, alongside both Liverpool and Manchester City.

It looks set to be a three-horse race this season and Ally McCoist believes that could benefit Arteta’s side.

McCoist makes ‘bizarre’ Arsenal title claim

Speaking on TalkSPORT (27/2 6:43 am), McCoist explained why he believes Arsenal may be under less pressure with an extra team in the title race this time around.

“I was there [Arsenal] on Saturday night, they’ve got a chance,” the pundit said. “I thought the first-half performance was as strong as any side I’ve seen all season, if I’m brutally honest with you.

“I think bizarrely, this might sound crazy, I think it might suit them that there’s more than one team challenging.

“From a mental approach, it might just take a little bit of pressure off them.

“Also, Odegaard’s been brilliant, Saka’s been brilliant, the front players have been different class, but I think the key to them moving on and continuing to progress, believe it or not, is the two centre-backs.

“I think as we saw last year, if you lose one of them, you can’t handle it.”

Of course, Arsenal fell short while going head-to-head with City for the Premier League crown last term.

But there is undoubtedly a different feel about this current Arsenal side and a new-found resilience, particularly in defence.

Arteta’s side still face some key fixtures before the season ends as they are set to travel to City, Tottenham and Manchester United.

These three games look set to be key to their title hopes and on current form, the Gunners won’t fear anyone.
