Arsenal have unveiled their match kit for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City, which features messages of support for the Black Lives Matter campaign and the NHS.
Players will have the names on the back of their shirts replaced with Black Lives Matter for the first 12 fixtures of the restarted top-flight campaign.
A Black Lives Matter logo will also feature on Premier League shirts for the remainder of the season, along with a heart-shaped badge thanking the NHS for their work.
Arsenal have released images of their third choice kit set to be worn at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening, and many Gunners fans were overjoyed.
Here is some of the social media reaction:
Any player who wishes to take a knee before or during matches – which has come to be recognised as a symbolic act in opposing racism – will be supported by the league.
The Premier League said it stands alongside the Football Association, English Football League, Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers’ Association and the Professional Game Match Officials Board in opposing discrimination in all its forms.
Before last week’s friendly with Brentford, Arsenal’s players took a knee and wore T-shirts printed with messages including “I can’t breathe”, “My skin is not a crime” and “I’m not black but I stand with you”.
The Premier League is set to resume behind closed doors after a three-month hiatus as Aston Villa host Sheffield United before Arsenal take on Man City, after which all teams will have nine games left.
