'This is an interesting one': Sky reporter suggests Arsenal player may leave on a free transfer
Dharmesh Sheth has told Sky Sports News that Alexandre Lacazette could leave Arsenal on a free transfer now.
Lacazette is entering the final year of his contract at Arsenal and the club are said to be willing to sell him.
However, it appears that the Gunners are now desperate to cash in on him at any price.
And Sheth claims that if Arsenal’s asking price isn’t met, they may just allow the Frenchman to run his contract down and leave on a free next year.
He said: “This is an interesting one, because he was in the plans with Arteta and he was getting a lot of first-team football last season, but he has entered the final year of his contract and no talks are planned or are underway over a new contract.
“If an offer does come that arsenal are happy with they will let Lacazette go, otherwise Lacazette will see out the remainder of his contract and leave for free next summer.
“He is of course free to sign a pre contract agreement in six months with a foreign club.”
In financial terms, losing Lacazette on a free transfer would be rather disastrous for Arsenal.
The Gunners invested heavily to sign him from Lyon back in 2017, and while he is over 30 now, he still retains a value.
Arsenal’s desire to keep him around for another year is understandable though, if they don’t get a fair price.
Lacazette still possesses a great deal of quality, and was a strong option for Arteta at times last term.
If Arsenal were to cash in on him it would be difficult to find a player of equal quality for a similar price, and that may just make keeping him around more appealing.
