Matt Doherty scored yet again for Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek as they beat Arsenal 3-1 to climb up to seventh in the Premier League table.

Doherty took his tally to eight goals for the season which is a stunning return for a defender. This includes four Premier League goals.

And according to Opta Stats, only Raul Jimenez has directly contributed to more goals for Wolves this season.

Doherty’s tally of eight goals and seven assists ranks him as Wolves’ second most potent attacking threat, statistically speaking. Jimenez leads the way with 23 direct contributions to goals.

But a combined total of 15 goals and assists is a remarkable tally for the Republic of Ireland international, who has gone from strength-to-strength this season.

It is easy to forget that this is Doherty’s debut campaign in the Premier League. He has made the step up from the Championship with aplomb and his stock continues to rise.

This stat shows just how important Doherty is for Wolves as well. Operating in the right-wing-back role, he is up there among the top players in the division for what he does.

Going forward, the 27-year-old carries a constant threat. He has the ability to use both feet and he has the skill, pace and determination to get the better of his markers.

Doherty’s attacking threat is central to Nuno Espirito Santo’s plan and Wolves’ success. And this stat proves just how crucial Doherty has been.
